Kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found hanged in his jail cell just a month after being sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years for holding three women captive in his Cleveland home, a prison official said early Wednesday.
Ariel Castro, 53, was found hanging in his cell around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, located south of Columbus in central Ohio, JoEllen Smith, Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokeswoman, said early Wednesday.
Prison medical staff performed CPR before Castro was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead around 10:50 p.m.
He was in protective custody because of the notoriety of his case, meaning he was checked every 30 minutes, but was not on suicide watch, Smith said. She said suicide watch entails constant observation.
Castro’s attorney Craig Weintraub said that his client’s family was “devastated by the news.”
He said Castro had been moved to the prison about two weeks ago and that relatives had visited “a couple of times” since then.
Weintraub acknowledged that the reaction of many people would likely be “good riddance” but said that he planned to “get to the bottom” of the circumstances surrounding Castro’s death. “This is a human being,” he added. “We are not going to let this go.”
Messages left for the women’s lawyers were not immediately returned early Wednesday.
Something told me this guy would take the easy way out, and he did!
