Gumbumper had the opportunity to chat it up with GQ magazine’s First Gentleman of Hip Hop, The suave and fashionable Mr. Fonzworth Bentley. Born Derek Watkins, Fonzworth is best known to many as an artist and pop culture style icon. He first blew on the scene when he was P Diddy’s sidekick on the show ‘Making the band.’ But, since then he has extended those notable 15-minutes and made them 2-hours and then some… Fonzworth is a force to be reckoned with. He caught the attention of top luminaries and began learning alongside Russell Simmons, P. Diddy, and Andre Harrell. After Kanye West called desiring to produce music for him, Bentley began CoolOutrageousLoversOfUniquelyRawStyle (C.O.L.O.U.R.S.), which was released online to much praise. His debut live performance was at Radio City Music Hall for CBS Fashion Rocks and he has since headlined on the BET College Tour and performed on Celebration of Gospel. He is the producer and host of the international hit MTV show, From Gs to Gents, and author of New York Times best-selling Self Help book ‘Advance Your Swagger: How to use Manners, Confidence and Style to Get Ahead,’ Fonzworth Bentley has achieved worldwide acclaim. Bentley has acted in the films Honey and Fat Albert, and has been a guest on talk shows Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan O’Brien, Wendy Williams, Chelsea Handler, The Today Show and The Late Show with David Letterman. Bentley also served as a surrogate for President Barack Obama during the 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. He is currently credited with arrangement and writing of several songs on critically acclaimed Kanye West, “Yeezus” Album and will have a featured role in sequel film ‘Think Like a Man Too.’
A lot of people may not know this but he is a mainstay on the speaking circuit at churches, high schools, colleges, and universities and created a curriculum piloted at Spelman College and Mississippi Valley State College, The Competitive Advantage, giving students necessary tools to empower them to stand out in today’s global economy. This artist, author, actor, producer and entrepreneur, will continue to shape the world with his mission to educate and entertain others through Kingdom inspired projects in film, television and stage. With all this Fonzworth’s most proud moment is being a new father. Fonzworth and his wife Faune Chambers Watkins welcomed their first child, daughter Zoie Alecia Watkins, to the world at L.A.’s St. Joseph’s Medical Center on July 30. Hear about how this shaped him, his plans and much more below.
Gumbumpers we hope you enjoy our exclusive, be sure to share, share, share and tell us what you think!
How does it feel to be back hosting this year’s AT&T Nation’s Football Classic?
What is your fondest memory of hosting AT&T NFC?
Did you join in with your violin? Lol
You have based some of your career on fashion and styling so, what are your thoughts on the current Morehouse dress code?
From your perspective do you think clothes make the man? And what essentials should they have in their closets going into fall 2013?
Starting with the basics:
The Navy blazer, single breasted and doubled breasted. You can never have enough blazers.
A pair of Grey flannels are always the most elegant staples. You can wear them with anything. Duke Ellington and Fred Astaire really made that piece really famous. Those can get beat up and be pretty old and still look good.
Lastly, I would say some Cashmere neck wear. It gives another lay up of texture to any ensemble.
Tell us something we don’t know about Fonzworth?
What lessons did you learn while at Morehouse and how have they helped your career?
I heard that quote in my junior year and I made that my mantra. Anything I approached, any job, any opportunity — I approached it with that point of view. That quote was always in the back of mind. It’s a mandate that I placed on myself that even when I made a copy it came back warm, it was the best copy. Once you place that stamp over your life people gain more confidence in you because you go above and beyond their expectations. I set the bar so far that peoples expectations are an after thought.
Do you have any new projects that you’re working on for 2014?
Are you still friends with Diddy?
We notice that you are quite the entertainer with skills in various areas, out of all those which would you say is the closest to your heart?
Did you ever dream that you would be as big as you are?
